❓ Ms. Quirk asks the Police Minister about prostitution-related offences and estimates of sex workers in WA. The Police Minister states they don't track prostitution numbers and provides offence statistics for specific sections of the Criminal Code and Prostitution Act from 2007-2010, deferring conviction data to the Attorney General.

(1) In accordance with the Containment Policy that operated from the mid 1970's until 2000, people who intended to work as prostitutes needed to register with Western Australia (WA) Police. This gave WA Police an indication of how many people were involved. As a result of the abolition of the Containment Policy in 2000 as well as doubts from the Director of Public Prosecutions about the viability, on public interest grounds, of prosecuting existing private place prostitution offences has led WA Police not to use finite public resources enforcing what is considered flawed legislation.
Consequently, WA Police do not have data on the number of prostitutes working in Western Australia as at 1 February 2010. Any estimation of the number would be inaccurate and misleading.
(a) The gender of prostitutes working in Western Australia is unknown for the same reason stated in response to question 1.
