ROOTS OF EMPATHY PROGRAM
This week in The West Australian , a headline “Too naughty for school at age 5” appeared. My question is about the Roots of Empathy program. (1) Has the evaluation process for the Roots of Empathy program been completed; if so, will the minister table the report; and, if not, why not? (2) Is the minister aware that in New Zealand the government is about to roll out Roots of Empathy programs in every school to reduce bullying and bad behaviour? (3) Does the minister intend to expand this program in Western Australia? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) I have been advised by the Department of Education and Training that the evaluation process has been completed, but the report has not yet been forwarded to me for consideration. I will determine the appropriate manner of release once I have had the opportunity to consider the report and the department’s comments on the report. (2) I have been advised that the Prime Minister of New Zealand has met with Mary Gordon, the developer of Roots of Empathy, and has committed to piloting the program in seven schools, not every school. I understand that the New Zealand government’s approach is similar to that adopted in Western Australia. (3) As I am still to receive the report, I have not yet formed an opinion on whether the program should be expanded at this stage.
