Draft NSW Hemp Industry Development Plan
898. Hon Dr Brian Walker to the Minister for Agriculture and Food:
I refer the minister
to the Draft NSW Hemp Industry Development Plan ,
a finalised version of which is due to be released soon.
(1) Does the Department of Primary Industries and
Regional Development recognise and acknowledge the figures from AgriFutures
Australia quoted in the New South Wales plan suggesting that the Australian
hemp industry could, with proper management, be a $100 million industry by
2032?
(2) Noting that there were 254 licensed hemp
facilities across New South Wales as at 31 March 2025, with a combined total of
1,350 hectares of hemp under cultivation in 2023–24, can the minister
please provide, on notice, if necessary, comparative figures for WA?
(3) Do we have a hemp industry development plan
here in WA, and, if not, would it be fair to say that the Cook Labor government
is under-representing local producers and developers when compared with the Minns
Labor government over east?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) The Department of Primary Industries and
Regional Development is aware of the figures from AgriFutures as quoted in the
draft New South Wales plan.
(2) In Western Australia, as of 31 March 2025,
there were 53 industrial hemp licences issued and in 2023–24 there was
a combined total of 25 hectares of hemp under cultivation.
(3) The decision to grow hemp is a commercial
decision for farm businesses. The WA Government has supported industry
development through research trials to provide advice to current and future
hemp growers.
