OAKAJEE INDUSTRIAL ESTATE
In view of the fact that heavy industries, including iron ore and oil-refining companies, are looking for an industrial site to develop an iron ore pellet plant and oil-refining facilities - (1) When will the proposed Oakajee industrial estate be formalised? (2) What is the immediate future of the Narngulu industrial site, given its close proximity to residential development within the Shire of Greenough? Hon KATE DOUST

On behalf of the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure, I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) An integrated whole-of-government approach has been established to provide a draft infrastructure framework to guide the potential development of the Oakajee industrial estate. It will focus on how the port and rail infrastructure would be linked with the Oakajee industrial estate, including the allocation of adequate product stockpile areas, and the management of the estate and infrastructure requirements. The industrial estate will be formalised when an agreement process for key infrastructure is ratified by Parliament. (2) The Geraldton region plan designates the Narngulu area for general industry, with a heavy industry core, and sets a buffer to protect industries from incompatible land uses and development. The land is currently zoned accordingly under the Shire of Greenough’s town planning scheme. The Shire of Greenough uses the scheme to determine development applications in and around Narngulu. The nearest residential subdivision to industrial land in Narngulu is currently more than two kilometres away.
