PUBLIC TRANSPORT —
WI-FI SERVICES — HUAWEI
858. Dr M.D. NAHAN to the Premier:
I refer to comments this week by the
Australian Signals Directorate chief, Mike Burgess, highlighting further
concerns regarding Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, and I quote —
a potential threat anywhere in the
network will be a threat to the whole network
Mr D.J. Kelly interjected.
The SPEAKER : Minister for
Water, I call you to order for the first time.
Dr M.D. NAHAN : Will the
Premier confirm, as per information obtained by the opposition, that Huawei is
involved in a second state government project—namely, to provide wi-fi
services to passengers using our public transport system?

I think in past question times we
have answered all these questions about the network. Essentially, Huawei is
providing a communication system between train drivers and headquarters. There
was a competitive tender process with five tenderers. Huawei came out with the
best product. It was consulted with security agencies in the federal
government, which came back and said that there were no security concerns;
therefore, we accepted what was adjudged by the Public Transport Authority as
the best tender. In relation to the second part of the member's
question, I have no knowledge of it.
