FIREARMS ACT —
EX-SERVICE PERSONNEL
1546. Hon Dr BRIAN WALKER to the minister representing the
Minister for Police:
I refer the minister to
correspondence received by a number of parliamentarians, me included, dated
Friday, 15 November, sent on behalf of ex-service personnel who hold current
firearms licences.
(1) Has the
minister received a request from ex-members of the SAS Regiment, ex-clearance
divers and/or members of the veterans' firearms owners club requesting
a meeting?
(2) If yes to
(1), will the minister table that correspondence so that all members of the
house can better appreciate the concerns that those ex-service personnel have
raised or intend to raise with him?
(3) If yes to
(1), has a time and date been set for such a meeting; and, if not, will the
minister commit to arranging this as a matter of urgency?
(4) In his
capacity as also the Minister for Veterans Issues, can the minister confirm
that the government supports the fair and equitable treatment of all ex-service
members?
(5) Will the
minister further confirm that the full provisions of the new Firearms Act 2024
have not yet come into force, and therefore any attempt by WA police to insist
that firearms owners adhere to them prior to their formal adoption is nothing
short of unwarranted intimidation?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. This answer has been provided by the Minister for
Police.
(1)–(5) Correspondence
has been received by my office. I previously met with the author when the
process first commenced approximately two years ago, and I am happy to meet
with the author again. My office is working to find an appropriate time for
another meeting with the author.
