in total will be removed or relocated; and, if not 160, what is the correct
number?
(2) For trees within
the waterfront project area, by the end of the project how many will have been —
(a) removed and relocated;
(b) removed and destroyed; and
(c) retained?
(3) What is the total
cost of removing the trees?
(4) Was Heritage
Council of Western Australia approval or advice sought prior to the removal of
any trees?
(5) Of those to be
relocated, will the minister provide a list of the sites to which they are to

I thank the member
for some notice of the question.
(1) A total of 281 trees will be removed or
relocated from within the Elizabeth Quay site. The Metropolitan Redevelopment
Authority will seek to purchase approximately 350 trees of varying species
through a local supplier; they will be grown over the next two and a half years
and incorporated into the project area in early 2015.
(2) There are 319
identified within the project area of which —
(a) Twenty-nine will be removed and replanted
back into the project area and 70 will be offered to local governments, schools
and community organisations for transplantation outside the project area.
(b) One hundred and thirty-seven are not
suitable for relocation as they are species that are not suitable for
transplantation at their current age and size, they are in poor health or
require significant preparation time. These trees will be disposed of.
(c) Thirty-eight will be retained in situ. A
further 45 trees will be removed from the road reserve by Main Roads WA and may
be offered to the MRA for transplantation.
(3) The total cost of
removing the trees is part of the $440 million approved budget for the project.
(4) Yes.
(5) Trees that are to be removed will be
taken to a temporary nursery prior to relocation back into Elizabeth Quay.
Locations for the trees are still to be determined.
