As the minister is well aware of the need for the facilities of Agriculture Western Australia at Lake Grace to be upgraded, especially to meet an ever-increasing demand for its services by farmers covering a very large area - (a) can the minister advise the House whether an upgrade of the facilities at Lake Grace is to take place in the 2001-02 financial year; and (b) if not, can the minister indicate when the much needed upgrade will be given serious budget consideration? Hon KIM CHANCE

I thank the member for the question, albeit this is again a question that would have been more appropriately answered had some notice been given because it relates to a particular facility in a budget process which is still under consideration. The whole question of research stations is under review at the moment.  A range of options are included in that review, including the possible disposal of some of those research stations.  I hasten to assure the member, however, that the Lake Grace facility is not one of those being considered for closure. (a) I am aware of the need for the upgrade, but I regret that right now I cannot answer the question about whether a commitment has been given for that upgrade to occur in the 2001-02 financial year.  I hope it will happen but, again, a determination has not been made at this stage. (b) I hope that the upgrade will take place in the coming year.  If it does not, I hope it will be as soon as possible thereafter.
