The Minister Replied:
Answer:
(1) (a) In 1997/98 the annual average weekday traffic on Riverside Drive between the Causeway and Plain Street was 47 880 vehicles per day.
In 1993/94, the annual average weekday traffic on Riverside Drive between Barrack Street and Governors Avenue was 62 490 vehicles per day.
(b) In 1998/99, the annual average weekday traffic on Wellington Street between Sutherland Street and Gordon Street was 31 060 vehicles per day.
In 1993/94 the annual average weekday traffic on Wellington Street west of Milligan Street was
42 720 vehicles per day.
(2) In July 2000 the weekday traffic figures (on collection days - not seasonally adjusted) were as follows:
(a) Riverside Drive between the Causeway and Plain Street - 26 010 vehicles per day.
Riverside Drive between Barrack Street and Governors Avenue - 38 090 vehicles per day.
(b) Wellington Street between Sutherland Street and Gordon Street - 25 390 vehicles per day.
Wellington Street west of Milligan Street - 23 130 vehicles per day.
(3) The tunnel was designed to handle traffic volumes of 6 300 vehicles per hour providing for free flow conditions with a total of four lanes. This was based on an average volume of 65 000 vehicles per day in 2001. The tunnel has a capacity in excess of 90 000 vehicles per day with some congestion providing a comparable level of service to adjacent sections of freeway. The capacity of the tunnel can be increased to cater for future traffic growth by providing for three lanes in each direction.
(4) Weekday traffic through the Northbridge tunnel over three collection days in September 2000 averaged 67 590 vehicles per day (not seasonally adjusted).
