VOICE REFERENDUM
596. Hon NICK GOIRAN to the Leader of the House representing
the Premier:
I refer to Premier Cook's
stated intention to campaign in favour of changing the Australian Constitution
to establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.
(1) Is the
Premier aware that on 9 May 2023, a petition was tabled containing 7 489
signatures calling on the then Premier to deliver to Parliament, within 14 days
of the petition being tabled, all briefing notes and similar documents he received on the proposed Voice prior to him making
his public declaration of support?
(2) Since
becoming Premier, has the Premier seen the advice his predecessor received on
the Voice?
(3) So that all Western
Australians might be privy to the same level of detail about the proposed
constitutional amendment before making their decision, will the Premier table
the last three briefing notes that Hon Roger Cook has received, whether as
Premier or Deputy Premier, about the proposed Voice?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) The
WA government supports changing the Australian Constitution to establish an
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. The priority and focus right now
for the WA government is to ensure the referendum is successful. All Western Australians
will have the opportunity to vote at the referendum later this year.
