(1) Will public housing suffer the same budget cuts that will be visited upon other areas of state government activity? (2) If so, how does the minister propose to deal with those cuts? Several members interjected. The PRESIDENT:  The minister will sit down and wait until all members are ready. Hon TOM STEPHENS

The housing portfolio is experiencing budget cuts as a consequence of decisions made by the federal coalition Government.  These cuts are a result of the combined effect of the goods and services tax and the Commonwealth-State Housing Agreement, which was signed off by the previous Minister for Housing with the current coalition Government.  The budget cut imposed upon the housing sector in Western Australia will reduce expenditure in that portfolio by $40 million over four years.  The federal coalition Government collaborated with this Government’s predecessors. Hon Ken Travers:  Tell them about the lies that the last Government told. The PRESIDENT:  No supplementary questions are allowed, particularly from parliamentary secretaries. Hon TOM STEPHENS:  The coalition Government imposed budget cuts upon the housing sector.  As an experienced member of this House, I am sure Hon Simon O’Brien will understand that he must wait for the budget to be brought down by this Government on budget day.
