AUDITOR GENERAL — INFORMATION SYSTEMS AUDIT REPORT
I refer to the Auditor General’s report entitled “Information Systems Audit Report” tabled in Parliament on 8 April 2009 that noted that the Auditor General was able to guess the password of one government agency and access almost 700 000 sensitive records via the internet. (1) Can the Premier provide a guarantee to Western Australian seniors who have recently provided their banking details to the government in order to receive the cost-of-living rebate that this information is secure? (2) Will the Premier, as a matter of urgency, reintroduce the Information Privacy Bill into the Legislative Assembly as noted by the Auditor General? Mr C.J. BARNETT

I thank the member for the question. He raised a number of important points. The security and privacy of information is critical. Security obviously becomes increasingly difficult given the amount of information that exists and the requirement to submit details, often personal. We saw the very poor situation during the previous government’s term when people’s licence information was provided to Wilson Parking. That was a low point and prompted, in part, this investigation by the auditor. The government will take his recommendations on board to ensure that that information is secure. (1) With respect to the information provided for the cost of living rebate, the Minister for Seniors and Volunteering and her agency are taking great care to make sure that any information provided is absolutely secure. That is one of the issues that has to be dealt with. Mr E.S. Ripper : Do you have confidence that that administration will be able to deliver? Mr C.J. BARNETT : Yes, I do. (2) The privacy legislation is with the Attorney General, and we intend to proceed with it.
