COUNTRY POLICE STATIONS — CLOSURE REVIEW
I refer the minister to the 20 November edition of The Countryman —my favourite read—which reported that the Minister for Police ordered WA Police to keep secret the findings of the country police station closure review, which investigated the closure of stations at Trayning, Wickepin, Gascoyne Junction, Menzies, Dumbleyung and Cranbrook. (1) Will the minister confirm whether he has read the review and/or whether he has made personal representation to the Minister for Police about the plight of these country towns? (2) Will the minister demand, on behalf of his party’s constituents, that the Minister for Police and his government now meet this $6 million election promise — Mr C.J. Barnett : You are talking to the wrong minister. Ms M.M. QUIRK : It is regional infrastructure, Premier. The question continues — and reopen these country stations immediately; and, if not, why not? Mr B.J. GRYLLS

(1)-(2) I thank the member for the question. It is quite interesting that a member of a government that actually closed down those police stations now seeks to support those stations by demanding that they reopen. I also suggest that it is probably the first time in the past eight years that anyone opposite has bothered to read a newspaper that focuses on regional issues, so I congratulate the member for that. With regard to my role in this matter, I am happy to report that just last night the Minister for Police facilitated a meeting between me, the Minister for Agriculture and Food and officers from the office of the Minister for Sport and Recreation with Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan so that we could discuss this very issue.
