representing the Minister for Health:
The minister has, no doubt, noticed
a promise by the federal Leader of the Opposition that a federal Labor
government would issue a licence to Kalgoorlie Health Campus for an MRI
machine.
(1) Can the
minister confirm that an MRI licence will not be issued by the federal government
until the MRI machine is installed and operational?
(2) When will the
government commit funding for the MRI, and what will be the installation date?

(1) Currently, no
formal application process is open for providers to apply for, or obtain,
Medicare magnetic resonance imaging eligibility—that is, a licence.
This situation is being monitored closely; however, any potential applications
for commonwealth government Medicare eligibility may not be able to be pursued
until the MRI machine is procured and installed.
(2) The concept
brief by the WA Country Health Service was finalised in December 2017. WACHS is
currently finalising the feasibility study that scopes out the MRI service in
more detail. This includes options analysis, demand modelling, and capital and
recurrent cost requirements. The feasibility study will then inform the
business case to be developed for consideration in the 2019–20 budget
process.
