(1) Do the State Agreements with Rio Tinto Iron Ore, and related memoranda, require the company to maintain the essential services of power and water and sewerage to the township of Tom Price, and what steps are being taken by the State Government to ensure that these requirements are being observed?
(2) Is it the case that the company is required to maintain street lighting in Tom Price, and is there any explanation why the street lighting of Tom Price has been allowed to drop to such a low sub-standard that the streets are no longer safe for local residents to move around town after sunset because the paths and footways are not lit sufficiently to enable the many pot holes and obstacles to be seen in sufficient time as to ensure safe movement?

Department of State Development advises:
(1) Hamersley Iron Pty Limited (Hamersley) is responsible for maintaining the essential services of power, water and sewer services to the town of Tom Price.
Hamersley reports to the Economic Regulation Authority for water and sewerage and to the Minister for Energy for electricity supply.
(2) The Shire of Ashburton is responsible for street lighting maintenance in Tom Price. The Shire of Ashburton has advised that it is reviewing lighting upgrades in Tom Price. A Lighting Plan is under development and is likely to be available by later this year. This plan will cover the next five years and the community will be consulted during the planning process.
