I refer the minister to the announcement that $12 million will be cut from health program funding for non-government organisations, and ask - (1) Will the minister confirm that funding for the carer support program run by Bunbury Pathways will continue; and, if not, why not? (2) Will the minister confirm that the carer support program is a health funding priority and will be quarantined from any redirection of government funding priorities; and, if not, why not? Hon SUE ELLERY

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) Yes. It is standard practice to review contracts against outputs and other criteria held in any contract. This provides opportunity for the Department of Health and the Government to ensure that public money is used in the most efficient and effective manner. In addition, there is a need to review the funding of programs as a result of the severe pressure that the decisions of the Commonwealth Government have placed on the State with respect to the Australian Health Care Agreement. I refer to the Minister for Health’s recent ministerial statement and advise that all areas of the health system are being closely scrutinised to ensure that funding is directed to the areas of greatest need to provide direct health benefits to the public of Western Australia. A review of all Department of Health contracts has been undertaken. This includes the carer support program run by Bunbury Pathways. The review will inform the department what funding will be provided to all agencies. I confirm that funding will continue until the review is completed. (2) The Government and the Department of Health recognise the value of carer support programs. However, there is a need to prioritise funding to the most appropriate services to provide the greatest direct health benefits to the public.
