Can the minister inform the Parliament of the number of Department of Education staff who hold positions in an acting capacity, with particular reference to senior positions in the head and district offices and to primary and secondary school principals and deputy principals? Hon G.T. GIFFARD

I thank the member for some notice of this question. As at 2 November 2001, 13 staff are acting in senior positions - level 9 and above - in the Department of Education head office, and 12 staff are acting in senior positions in Department of Education district offices. This is subject to the restructure. In providing the number of public servants acting in senior positions, the department has taken the broader view and included those who are acting in a relieving capacity. As at 2 November, 190 primary and secondary school principals and 303 primary and secondary school deputy principals are in an acting capacity. A number of principal positions are filled by deputy principals, whose positions are in turn filled by teaching staff. The numbers of staff acting in principal and deputy principal roles have been extracted from the payroll system. These figures may include some employees who are recorded as acting in a higher level but who have recently returned to their previous position, which is not yet reflected in the system.
