As the minister responsible for the Members of Parliament (Financial Interests) Act 1992, will he launch an immediate investigation into the disappearance from the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly’s office of documents relating to the member for Yokine’s 2003-04 annual return? Dr G.I. GALLOP

Let us look at the contrast here. Members of the opposition said earlier today that they knew about this matter in April and did absolutely nothing. This morning we heard of the matter and immediately contacted the Clerk’s office. A letter was read out to the Parliament by the member for Yokine in relation to this issue. It states - Earlier this year, in April or May 2005, a person examining the register brought to the attention of John Mandy, Deputy Clerk, that the schedule as an attachment to section 6 of your 2003-04 return was missing. The attachment was identified in section 6 - Mr D.F. Barron-Sullivan interjected. Dr G.I. GALLOP : Who did? Members of the opposition knew and did nothing. This is how serious it is. The letter goes on to state - Although Mr Mandy has indicated that it was reported to me at the time, I do not recall that. Irrespective of that, the register is my responsibility. We would expect our parliamentary institutions to look after that register properly and to make sure it is working properly. The Speaker is looking into a range of matters related to that as part of his duties as Chairman of the Procedure and Privileges Committee and we would expect him to do that.
