Planning—Urban tree canopy
328. Hon Dr Brad Pettitt to the parliamentary
secretary representing the Minister for Planning and Lands:
I refer to the media
statement "New data reveals steady tree canopy cover across Perth and Peel",
revealing that new methodology canopy cover for the Perth and Peel region in
2024 was 22%, and the Labor government's previous commitment to doubling canopy
cover by 2040.
(1) What was the headline tree canopy cover for
Perth and Peel in 2024 if the previously used 2020 methodology and land area
were applied?
(2) Will the WA Labor government now commit to
doubling tree canopy to 44% by 2040?
(3) If no to (2), why not?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question. I provide the following
response on behalf of the Minister for Planning and Lands.
(1) The previous
methodology cannot be applied to the 2024 dataset. Applying the new methodology
to the 2020 dataset enables a comparison between the 2020 and 2024
datasets, which is 21% and 22% cover respectively.
(2)–(3) The Cook government is developing
the state's first-ever urban greening strategy for Perth and Peel and has
committed to significant investment in tree plantings and reaching an urban
canopy of 30% by 2040.
