❓ A WA parliamentary question on notice regarding the allocation of revenue from speed and red light cameras to road safety projects. The Minister disputes the accuracy of the member's figures and reaffirms the government's commitment to spending the revenue on road safety.

QuestionView source ↗
I refer the minister to the Government’s pre-election commitment on road safety funding, which required all speed and red light camera revenue to be spent on legitimate projects satisfying strict road safety criteria. (1) Given that the 2002-03 state budget papers predicted income from speed and red light cameras of $44 million in the coming financial year, as well as an additional $10 million, as revealed by The West Australian , will the minister guarantee to the House that all revenue from these sources is spent on legitimate road safety projects? (2) Will the minister guarantee that any additional income from the fixed speed camera in the Northbridge tunnel, expected to be in the order of $7.3 million, is also directed to legitimate road safety projects? (3) How can the people of Western Australia be assured that this Government is not merely channelling speed and red light camera revenue into its treasure chest? Mrs M.H. ROBERTS

(1) I am disappointed by the question from the member for Carine, because I thought she might have done her homework a little better. If she had read the newspaper article, she would be aware that the increase in funding of over $10 million occurred in the 2001-02 financial year. I tabled that information in the House about a year ago, and I have detailed how that money was spent. Therefore, the first part of the member’s question is factually incorrect. (2) The member is also incorrect in referring to additional money raised by speed and red light cameras in this year’s budget, because we are expecting the figure to be about $10 million down on last year. (3) All the money raised from speed and red light cameras, and more, is spent on road safety. I tabled a report on this in the Parliament last year, and I will be tabling another in the very near future.
