SCHOOLS —
CHAPLAINS
869. Hon SAMANTHA ROWE to the
Minister for Education:
I refer to the provision of chaplains in schools. How many schools
are still trying to fill their chaplaincy position given that the changes in
funding did not allow for time to ensure a ready workforce?

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question. I note that this question was asked on 17 June, and the response I
give is of 31 July.
I am advised that as at 3l July 2015, of the 500 schools
funded for an in-school chaplain, 410 have had an in-school chaplain appointed,
71 schools have requested a chaplain, and 19 are yet to finalise the
procurement of an in-school chaplain. Schools now have the autonomy to make
decisions about how to best use their resources. Principals may choose to
request an in-school chaplain for more days a week over a shorter period,
rather than one or two days a week over the year.
