CARNARVON FASCINE
678. Ms M. BEARD to the Minister for Transport:
I have a supplementary question.
Will the minister join me in Carnarvon to discuss the project in more detail,
including seeing and hearing firsthand the impact on the community and members
of the businesses and Carnarvon Yacht Club, while the fascine remains closed,
including not being able to use the pens that are already in the yacht club
facility?
The SPEAKER : I will just give
the member some advice. That supplementary question was rather long and a bit
detailed. Supplementary questions should be shorter and sharper to the point.

I have been up there a number of
times, working with community members. But I want to say this: the member for
North West Central's predecessor had an approach and that was to
politicise everything and make it into an attack on ministers. As a result, he
did not get much done, because of his approach. So my advice would be: I am
happy to have a collaborative relationship with the member for North West Central
to deliver to the community, but if the
member follows the game plan of her predecessor, it will not be a good time for
her, because of the attacking and
politicisation of everything. The Nationals WA was there for eight and a half
years, but everywhere I go, people say,
''This issue has been here for 20 years.'' They say, ''This
has been here for 15 or 20 years. Why didn't you fix it?''
The memorandum of understanding between the shire and the state government went
back to the 1990s. Why did the previous government not take control of it, when
it had $8 billion? Why did it not do that? It did not do it, but as I said, I am
very keen to deliver a good solution for the people of Carnarvon, and we continue
to work on that. I hope there is some
appreciation of the boat pens that have already been opened. When I went up
there, they were already being used by boat owners in that area.
The SPEAKER : The member for
Cockburn with the last question.
