I thank the member for Kingsley. The
first award related to a memorandum of understanding between the Department of
Corrective Services and the Drug and Alcohol Office, for which they received
the capacity building award. The MOU between the departments focused on
structured drug and alcohol training for adult custodial and community
corrections staff. In the past three years, more than 900 Department of
Corrective Services staff have received training on topics such as drug
classification, drug harms and managing offenders' drug-use behaviour.
The award recognises the memorandum of
understanding as a genuine partnership that improves outcomes for
offenders, families and the wider community and ensures that these outcomes are
sustained.
The second award related to the work of the Department of
Corrective Services and the Department of the Attorney General at the Perth
Children's Court and Drug Court, for which they won the young people's
award. The staff at the Drug Court deal with young people who have committed
offences and have alcohol and drug issues. This award recognises the
achievements made by the two departments to prevent and reduce drug and alcohol
harm amongst young people—which, as members in this place will
appreciate, is a significant problem in not only prisons, but also the wider
community—and recognises the success of the Drug Court's
evidence-based and comprehensive program that addresses health and social
issues and diverts young people away from the criminal justice system. These
awards demonstrate that this government is committed to addressing the problems
of drugs and alcohol in our community and their links with offending by
implementing programs at the grassroots level with great success.
