PUBLIC HOSPITALS — RESOURCES —
LAVERTON HOSPITAL
148. Mr V.A. CATANIA to the Premier:
I refer to the Premier's
2015 ''Fresh Ideas for WA'' document, which includes a promise
that six people should get help
straightaway, and the recently released ''Getting things done: The first
two years of the McGowan Government'' document that states —
The McGowan Government is
focused on ensuring Western Australians have access to quality health care, no
matter where they live.
Does the Premier agree with the
comments that his health minister made in this place on Tuesday that the
Laverton Hospital rebuild is a ''luxury'' the government cannot
afford?

Clearly, the government is investing
a great deal of public money in hospital upgrades across the regions, as you
would know, Mr Speaker, because on Tuesday we announced more than $13 million
for a cancer treatment centre in Albany, which was a great outcome. I note that
there is a lot of unhappiness amongst the Liberals and Nationals about us
providing cancer treatment for the people of the great southern—something
that they were unable to achieve. We are very, very pleased to be able to do
that. We have money in the budget for Geraldton hospital. As members know, Peel
Health Campus received zero dollars and zero cents during the last government;
$10 million has been spent there. Going across the regions, members will find
lots of hospital improvements.
I want to make one other point.
Regional parents rely very heavily upon the major hospitals in the city and we
got the children's hospital open. Lots of regional kids and their
parents are very pleased about the fact that this government took the steps
required to get that open.
We understand that Laverton Hospital
is important. That is a project that we are currently looking at, and obviously
we understand the desire for Laverton Hospital to be rebuilt. That is something
the government is currently considering.
