POLICE — VACANCIES
365. Mr P.J. RUNDLE to the Minister for Police:
I have a supplementary question. The minister talks about
fluctuations. I am talking about one in five positions that are vacant. Surely
the minister can do more to make sure that the road policing command unit
always has a full complement of officers to improve road safety.

I thank the member. It is a fact that there is something
like, the last time I checked, over 300 officers at the Western Australia Police Academy training right now. In this 12-month
period, 1 000 will pass through the academy . More than 2 600 Western Australians
have applied to join the police force. More than 1 500 experienced officers
from the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand, and other states, have
applied to join the Western Australia Police Force. They are progressing
through the pathway to becoming Western Australian police officers. As I said earlier,
there are more police officers than ever before. Right now there are somewhere
between 500 and 600 more than when the opposition was in government. We are
going to grow the numbers. They will continue to grow. I think they do a wonderful
job, but I would love to have more of them. That is why every day, we are
focused on providing the commissioner with the resources he requires. As I said
at the outset, where the officers go, how they are employed and where resources
are applied is totally in the control of the commissioner, as it should be.
