SUICIDE — FLY IN, FLY OUT WORKERS
981. Hon STEPHEN DAWSON to the minister
representing the Minister for Mental Health:
I refer to deaths of fly in, fly out
workers in Western Australia.
(1) Which senior
clinician undertook the review into FIFO deaths that was promised by the former
Minister for Mental Health in June 2014?
(2) What was the outcome of the
review, and will the minister table the report?
(3) How much funding was allocated
to the review, and how much of that funding was spent?

I thank the member for some notice
of the question. I note that this answer is dated 17 May, so it is correct as
of that date.
(1)–(3) A
review into the suicide deaths of fly in, fly out workers was proposed prior to
the announcement of the inquiry into the impact of FIFO work practices on
mental health by the Education and Health Standing Committee. The inquiry's
terms of reference were noted to have significant overlap with the outcomes of
the proposed review. This included examining the contributing factors to mental
illness and suicide among FIFO workers; the current services available to FIFO
workers and their accessibility; and developing recommendations for the
responsibility and improvement of these services. These outcomes were satisfied
by the final report of the inquiry. To prevent duplication of this work, a review
of FIFO deaths by the Mental Health Commission did not occur. The commission
instead provided two submissions to the inquiry.
