(1) How many procedures for people on elective surgery waitlists were deferred for each month from January 2012 to March 2013? (2) Will the Minister please list the reasons that each of these procedures were deferred and at which hospitals they were scheduled to be performed?

(2) Health services are unable to answer this question with any accuracy as this is not a mandatory data collection field.  The request would require key staff to work off line, as there are 19,314 cases which would require the patient's medical record to be checked.
The reason for deferral is not captured centrally; it is not a mandatory reporting requirement for elective surgery. Hospitals may record the reason for deferral in either the patient administration systems: webPAS, TOPAS or HCARe or in the Theatre Management System (TMS).
As per the definitions, the reasons for deferral are that the patient is not available for surgery due to:
· family or carer responsibilities
· work commitments
· holiday plans
· unfit for surgery
