MINING —
EMPLOYMENT
803. Mr W.J. JOHNSTON to the Minister for Mines and
Petroleum:
I have a supplementary question. Why in his answer did the
minister not show any concern about the huge reduction of employment in the
minerals exploration sector, when it is the lifeblood of the mining industry's
future?

AnswerView source ↗

I do not know how the member could read my face to see
whether I had concern or not. Obviously, there is concern.
Mr W.J. Johnston interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for Cannington!
Mr W.R. MARMION : As the Premier said, there are 100 000
people working in the mining industry and if we add the oil and gas industry,
it is 111 000 people, which is considerable employment of people in Western
Australia. Obviously, any reduction in that employment is of considerable
concern to this government and to me as Minister for Mines and Petroleum.
