HOME INVASION — POLICE RESPONSE TIME
I refer to the case of a young Cranbrook woman and her two children who were recently the alleged victims of a home invasion and who claim to have waited 45 minutes for police to attend. (1) Can the minister confirm how much time elapsed between the distress call being made and the attendance of the police at the scene? (2) Does he consider it acceptable that a young woman with children who have been traumatised by allegedly having their door smashed in by an intruder should have to wait so long for police to respond? (3) Does he still believe that the closure of country police stations will improve, not diminish, the policing effort? (4) What does he say to the people of Cranbrook who now live with the knowledge that, in the event of a violent attack, they must wait for police to travel from Tambellup, which is 30 kilometres away, or Mt Barker, which is 39 kilometres away? Mr J.C. KOBELKE

(1)-(4) I thank the member for giving some prior notice of the question, but when I came into the chamber at two o’clock, the police had not been able to ascertain the details of that case by speaking to local officers. It is a horrendous situation when a home invasion occurs and people must seek support from the police and neighbours. Certainly, they look to that response to give them the support and protection that they seek. However, I make it clear to the house that there is now a much faster response time than there was under the Liberal-National Party coalition. In fact, under the Liberal-National Party coalition, a lot of people could not even get through to the call centre to have their pleas answered. At least there is now a much quicker response through logging calls at the call centre and through the radio network so that police can respond in a far more efficient way. I will certainly get an answer from the police and provide it to the member, because the police had not been able to provide me with the details of that case as at the beginning of question time today.
