BALGA WORKS PROGRAM
I refer to the Premier’s comments yesterday - Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order! It is inappropriate to not allow the member to ask his question. Mr T. BUSWELL : I refer to the Premier’s comments yesterday that the Balga Works program was closed in October 2006. (1) Can the Premier confirm that as of last Monday the Balga Works program was still operating from Balga Senior High School? (2) Why is the Department for Community Development providing accommodation funding for a program that, according to the Premier, closed in October? (3) Why is it that the member for Joondalup presented a petition asking for the Balga Works program to be closed when, according to the Premier, the program closed in October? (4) Is the Balga Works program still operating; if so, in what form? Mr A.J. CARPENTER

(1)-(4) We do not have the advantage of the blue copies of Hansard . If we did, the member would see that two elements to the issue about the Balga Works program were mentioned yesterday. One related to its role in the high school. The information I was provided by the Department of Education and Training told me that the educational and training element of the Balga Works program at the senior high school was closed in October 2006. The other related to elements in a question by the member for Joondalup. If the Deputy Leader of the Opposition has a look at my answer, he will see that the answer was something like: the Department for Community Development was funding the Balga Senior High School parents and citizens association, which was in turn contracting services for accommodation, I think it was, from Hurson Pty Ltd or the Balga Works group, more broadly. The answer to the third question I was asked by the member for Murdoch was that it was operating from an address in Joondalup. I cannot remember the address. However, if the Deputy Leader of the Opposition looks at those two streams of inquiry, he will see that the answer to the member for Murdoch will satisfy the component he is talking about that relates to non-school activities. The advice I have from the Department of Education and Training is that the school-based activity - that is, the Department of Education and Training involvement at the school - was closed in October 2006.
