(1)–(2) That is an excellent
question. Of course, the Premier is in Shanghai today at LNG2019, at the invitation
of Western Australia's large LNG producers. He was encouraged to attend
to ensure that the marketing of Western Australian LNG gets maximum exposure at
that very important conference. My shadow would remember LNG18 held in Perth
three years ago and the excitement that that generated in Western Australia as
one of the largest conferences in our state's history. Today in
Shanghai it is much larger. The Premier has been able to cut through with a very
important announcement for Western Australia. Today the Premier announced that
we will financially support the LNG futures facility by providing cash support as
well as industrial land in the Kwinana industrial precinct. It will allow the
construction of a micro-LNG facility. This will be a world-first opportunity.
It means people can do research and development on a live LNG facility. That
happens nowhere else in the world. The issue is that new technologies are being
developed in many industries, including the LNG sector, but these major
companies obviously will not use their production facilities for testing these
new ideas. Instead, Western Australia will have the only facility in the world
that will allow live testing of new technologies in an actual plant, here in Western
Australia. Literally thousands of researchers will come from around the world
to apply their ideas here, and we will get an enormous opportunity for
spin-off. This is a major part of the Premier's LNG task force, and it
reflects the value we can get out of cooperating with industry. When the
Liberal opposition opposed the Gorgon project, it undermined —
Dr M.D. Nahan : Rubbish, we
built it.
Mr W.J. JOHNSTON : The then
Premier said it should not be built on Barrow Island. That is what he said, and
he flew to Sydney and said that we should not do industrial work in the Barrow.
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition.
Mr W.J. JOHNSTON : That is
what he did when he was Leader of the Opposition. That should not be allowed to be forgotten. This is an important outcome
of the Premier's LNG task force. It is the sort of example of the
high-skill , high-wages, and research and development jobs that we can
create when government works effectively with industry. It is a strong credit
to the Premier and shows the genuine leadership that he is delivering for the
state, unlike the failed leadership delivered in the past. This is another
opportunity for those high-industry 4.0 jobs that we can all support and the
Labor government is supporting.
