FIREARMS — BUYBACK PROGRAM
444. Hon WILSON TUCKER to the minister representing the
Minister for Police:
I
refer to the joint media statement of the Premier and the Minister for Police,
dated 14 February 2024, which states —
A payment schedule based on current
retail baseline valuations, similar to those used in the 1996–97
Commonwealth buyback, has been developed in conjunction with industry
stakeholders.
Can the minister advise the house of
the exact similarities between the current buyback and the commonwealth buyback
of 1996?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
The Western Australia Police Force
advises that in both instances, legislation prohibited certain firearm
ownership and the government chose to offer remuneration to all firearms owners
to relinquish their firearms.
