The federal Government this week released the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission report on reducing fuel price variability. Did the report’s recommendations support the strong regulatory role undertaken by the Gallop Government? Mr KOBELKE

I thank the member for the question. It is interesting that this report from the ACCC was about price variability and not about getting the best deal for motorists. Nonetheless, the federal Government received the report in December last year. A question must certainly be asked about why the federal Government decided to drop this report on budget day. Was it in order to hide a report of many hundreds of pages? Mr Costello’s press release states that the federal Government agrees with the five recommendations contained in the report. The first recommendation is that there should be improved consumer awareness of this issue. Clearly, the State Government is doing that in Western Australia. The second recommendation is that the Government should hold discussions with industry. That recommendation does not provide that the federal Government must do anything, only that it should discuss the matter with industry. The federal Government would clearly support that. Recommendation 3 states - The current terminal gate pricing arrangements in Western Australia and Victoria should be monitored closely before a final conclusion is made about terminal gate pricing. That recommendation indicates that Western Australia and Victoria are leading Australia in trying to look after motorists. The federal Government will continue to watch what we are doing to see whether it should be replicated across Australia. The federal Government has indicated that it does not believe in regulation. The report did not support the 24-hour pricing regulation that is in place in this State and which has been a great success for Western Australia. The federal Government goes along with that recommendation. The fifth recommendation states - The fuel pricing arrangements in Western Australia should continue to be monitored closely. The federal Government will support that recommendation. Western Australia is leading Australia. We are happy to show the federal Government how it can do something to look after motorists in this nation.
