The Shire of Merredin has one private general practice with one full time doctor and one part-time doctor. They work Monday to Thursday 9am - 5.15pm; Fridays 8am - 3pm and when doctors are available they will work an occasional Saturday morning.
The Shire of Merredin has been advertising for an additional doctor for many years and now has recruited a doctor to start in January 2011.
There are also salaried doctors working at Merredin Hospital. This became necessary as there were not enough private general practitioners to cover the after hours service at the hospital.
Currently the WA Country Health Service funds 1.5 FTE but is actively recruiting to increase this to 2.5 FTE in order to ensure 24hour a day continuous cover for the hospital.
The position in the general practice has been vacant for most of the time over the last 10 years. There was a short period where the practice had 3 doctors. This led to the WA Country Health Service employing doctors about 3years ago.
