SMALL BUSINESS —
SHOPLIFTING
653. Mrs A.K. HAYDEN to the Premier:
I
refer to my questions without notice 602 and 603 last week to the Minister for
Small Business about the 37 per cent spike in shoplifting and whether he
had sought more police resources to address the matter. Does the Premier agree
with the minister's dismissive approach to the damage shoplifting is
having our on small businesses or does the Premier consider the matter to be an
important priority for his government?

Of course, I have been appalled by
some of that imagery we have seen these days of people brazenly stealing from shops around our community shopping centres—sports
stores, supermarkets or whatever it might be. A number of us have
experienced seeing it in person. Whilst the overall crime rate under our
government is falling, this is an issue that the Minister for Police and I have
spoken about and the minister continues to work with the Commissioner of Police
on this issue.
