I thank the member for the question. No doubt, all members
would agree that Armadale is a very important strategic regional centre in the
metropolitan area and that there has been a large amount of growth in
residential, commercial and industrial development in the Armadale region and
the south east metropolitan area. In recent times there has been a lot of
growth and a range of new facilities have been provided by the private sector
and the state government. The recently released sub-regional planning framework
for the south metropolitan and Peel regions proposes a replacement TAFE
facility in Armadale. That is recognised as a need. I note that a couple of
months ago the government allocated $9.4 million to improve the high schools in
the Armadale area to provide improved educational facilities.
The MRA has an important role in the growth and development
of the Armadale district. There is a draft structure plan for the city centre
west precinct, which covers 10 hectares of land adjacent to the Armadale train
station. This plan provides a vision for new homes for around 2 000 new
residents who will take advantage of the high level of services close to the
Armadale CBD and of course the train line. Structure planning in the area is
supported by $2 million allocated in this year's budget for the purpose
of designing and constructing road and drainage infrastructure, including
public open spaces that will assist in the development of transport-oriented
residential developments. This investment will see private sector investment
follow, as developers undertake the development of housing. This is in addition
to the private sector investment of more than $470 million we have seen in
Armadale in recent years. An allocation of $1.6 million to design and construct
road infrastructure and public open space in the Champion Drive area will
complement the Department of Housing's residential development. This
year's budget allocates $25.6 million for further development in Forrestdale
Business Park west. That development is leading to additional employment
opportunities and economic development in the Armadale district. An example of
the benefit of that investment is the decision by Hitachi Construction
Machinery Australia to invest $100 million to develop a 100 000 square metre
site at Forrestdale Business Park west, which will provide work for about 350 employees
and is expected to be completed early next year.
