665 asked on 16 June 2015 about safety relating to the stretch of South Coast
Highway between McIntosh Road and Springdale Heights in Denmark.
(1) How did Main Roads WA arrive at
the conclusion that this section of road was safe?
(2) When did Main Roads WA carry out
the safety assessment of this stretch of road?
(3) Will the minister table the
safety assessment?
(4) If the minister
knows about the serious concerns of local road users about the dangers posed by
overtaking eastbound traffic, why has he failed to act?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) Main Roads
inspected this section of road and determined that it met the guidelines for
the current posted speed limit.
(2) The inspection referred to in
part (1) was undertaken in the first quarter of 2015.
(3) Yes. On that
matter, unfortunately, the required document has not arrived from the
department and I will table it once it does so.
(4) Main Roads
has assessed a number of criteria associated with this section of South Coast
Highway, including sight distances, traffic volumes and crash history, and has
determined that this section of road meets the standards for a 110-kilometre-an-hour
posted speed limit and is appropriate for its current use. In addition, Main
Roads will review the line marking at intersections in this section of South
Coast Highway by 30 June 2016.
