I thank the member for her question.  I am pleased to inform the House that last week I was able to announce a new strategy that will address the issue of keeping families together and in their homes before they are made homeless.  Last week I also announced that a new advocacy service is being established, with funds to the tune of $1 million.  This service will aim to prevent people from becoming homeless.  It is a clear preventive strategy that works in complex situations, but tackles the fundamental issues of homelessness.  I am pleased to announce that the service will work with families or individuals to assess their needs and issues, to plan the required supports and to offer one-on-one in-home support and practical assistance.  In addition, when complex tenancy matters are involved, the new service will be able to provide information and referral to other agencies and community resources, such as financial counselling and domestic violence counselling.  These supports are aimed at providing long-term housing stability. Six of the services will be located in the metropolitan area, and the three regional services will service the Geraldton area, the Mandurah and Busselton area, and the Augusta and Margaret River area.  These services are expected to be ready and available early in the new year.  I am delighted to say that these new services are part of the Government’s commitment of $32 million over four years to tackle the critical issues of homelessness and social exclusion.  They are based on the important principle of preventive strategies and are tackling the hard social issues before families fall into crisis.
