KALUMBURU —
MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES
753. Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH to the Minister for Mental
Health:
I refer to an armed home invasion last week in Kalumburu by a
man with known mental health issues.
(1) Was this
man's mental health condition reported to the local health clinic and
police in the week leading up to the break-in?
(2) On how
many occasions was the man's mental health condition reported to the
local health clinic in the weeks leading up to the break-in and what action was
taken by the clinic?
(3) Was the
man held in custody whilst waiting for an available plane to medivac him to
Perth for treatment; and, if so, for how long?
(4) What acute
mental health services from Broome are provided to people in Kalumburu?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for some notice
of the question.
(1) I am advised
by the Department of Health that the local health clinic staff were aware of
the man's mental health condition and were active in managing his
condition. Police were also aware.
(2) The man
presented five times and was assessed on each occasion and provided with
treatment for his presenting symptoms. On the final visit, a referral to the
Broome mental health unit was offered, but this was declined by the patient.
(3) I am
advised by the Department of Health that the man was held in custody from
approximately two o'clock in the morning until 1.00 pm the same day,
and he was then transferred via the Royal Flying Doctor Service to Graylands.
(4) Specialist
mental health services are provided to Kalumburu through the Kununurra mental
health clinic. Monthly outreach is undertaken by plane from Kununurra. Interim
telephone support is also offered on an as-needed basis. This is supplemented
by quarterly visits by a psychiatrist or registrar to Kalumburu. The
psychiatrist and registrar are both based in Broome.
