ANIMAL WELFARE ACT 2002 — ANIMAL CRUELTY
CASES
813. Hon LINDA SAVAGE to the minister representing the
Minister for Agriculture and Food:
(1) How many
prosecutions for cruelty to livestock under the Animal Welfare Act 2002 were
moved from the Department of Local Government to the Department of Agriculture
and Food when administration of the act was transferred on 1 July 2011?
(2) How many of
these prosecutions are currently before the courts and how many have been
discontinued?
(3) How many
investigations and prosecutions for cruelty to livestock has DAFWA initiated
since 1 July 2011?
(4) How many
investigations regarding cruelty to livestock has DAFWA referred to the Royal
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (WA) since 1 July 2011, and
how many of these have led to prosecutions?
(5) How many
Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service adverse incident reports from
accredited abattoirs in WA have been received since 1 July 2011, and how many
of these have been investigated and prosecuted by either DAFWA or the RSPCA?

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1) There were 48 charges against five accused.
(2) Forty-two
charges against three accused are currently before the courts, and six charges
against two accused have been discontinued.
(3) There have
been 128 investigations, and 16 charges against three accused.
(4) Six reports
have been referred to the RSPCA. The RSPCA has laid five charges against one
accused in relation to one matter currently before the courts.
(5) Twenty-three
AQIS adverse incident reports have been received since 1 July 2011. There have
been 23 investigations and no prosecutions to date.
