I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following answer is provided on behalf of the
Minister for Environment.
(1) The 2019–20
data provided by the minister was sourced from annual returns submitted by
recyclers under regulation 18C of the Waste
Avoidance and Resource Recovery Regulations 2008, waste levy data submitted under Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Levy
Regulations 2008 and voluntary landfill composition data from
metropolitan landfill operators or regional landfill operators receiving
metropolitan waste.
(2) The first
reports required under the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Regulations
2008 were due on 1 October 2020. Independent third party auditing was
undertaken on a sample of returns in the current financial year. This did not include construction and demolition waste
generated in the metropolitan area. Future programs will target a range
of liable entities to ensure data accuracy and compliance with the regulations.
