Hon Jess Beckerling questions the Minister for Racing and Gaming about the potential importation of New Zealand greyhounds into WA for racing, following New Zealand's ban on greyhound racing. The Minister's response indicates that greyhounds registered in Australasia are generally permitted to race in WA, but WA would reciprocate any sanctions imposed by New Zealand.

Greyhound racing—New Zealand greyhound importation440.Hon Jess Beckerlingto theminister representing
the Minister for Racing and Gaming:I refer to the
recent ban of greyhound racing in New Zealand and the comments made by New
Zealand racing minister Right Hon Winston Peters, who stated that relocating
dogs to another country for racing will not be permitted. I also refer to
information that a chartered flight containing 80 New Zealand greyhounds
arrived in Queensland in April 2025 with the intention for them to be raced in
Australia.(1) Will the minister be allowing New Zealand
greyhounds into WA for the purposes of racing?(2) If no, what measures are in place to ensure no
greyhounds arrive in WA from New Zealand for racing?

Hon Matthew Swinbourn replied:I thank the member
for some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me
by the Minister for Racing and Gaming.(1) Greyhounds bred in other Australasian racing
jurisdictions can participate in racing in WA. If a greyhound is registered
with a controlling body in Australasia, Racing and Wagering WA may accept its
nomination to race in WA. Should New Zealand impose a penalty or embargo on any
greyhound within its jurisdiction RWWA would reciprocate that sanction upon the
greyhound's arrival in WA.(2) Not applicable.
