STATE
BUDGET 2015–16 — DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE
584. Hon KATE DOUST to the
Minister for Commerce:
I refer to the 2015–16
Western Australian state budget and the more than $23 million in cuts over the
next four years to the Building Commission, Consumer Protection Division,
EnergySafety, industry and technology, labour relations and WorkSafe.
(1) How will these
savings measures be achieved?
(2) Can the minister provide a guarantee that
service delivery in all six offices within the Department of Commerce will not
be negatively impacted upon as a result of these cuts?
(3) Can the minister provide a guarantee that
no employee will be forced to take redundancy as a result of these cuts?

(1)–(3) I thank the member for the
question. The Department of Commerce, like all departments across government,
has been required to make economies in its expenditure in order meet the state's
fiscal position. Part of that has been as a result of agency expenditure
reviews. The Department of Commerce, like every other government department,
will work within the budget that is provided. Where those economies take place
will be a matter for the director general of the department, in consultation
with me, to ensure that frontline services are not affected and that any
economies that need to take place with respect to staffing levels will be
something that will also be determined on a case-by-case basis.
