LIVE EXPORT —
GOVERNMENT POLICY
425. Mr P.J. RUNDLE to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question. As
the Premier has just stated that he is a friend of local jobs, are he and the
Minister for Agriculture and Food now in full support of this vital WA
industry; and will they make that position public to reassure our farmers and
the 3 500 people employed in associated industries?

The industry's total value,
from my recollection, is around $250 million. It is important in some parts,
particularly in the wheatbelt, of course, where the sheep industry is, and it
has a considerable number of jobs in transport and at some ports. As I said, I did
not call for it to be closed down; I called for its standards to improve, and
improve markedly. There was a closure of the industry, I think last year,
because the federal National Party minister closed it down for a time. That,
obviously, was a bit of a shock to the system for the industry, but I repeat
that I urge it to not to become complacent and think that public concern about
these issues has dissipated.
