MR CLIFF GREEN — APPROACH TO PREMIER AND MINISTER FOR POLICE
I refer to the numerous urgent requests made to the Premier and to the Minister for Police for a meeting with my constituent, Mr Cliff Green, to discuss an amendment to the Firearms Act to enable Mr Green to potentially win contracts valued at more than $500 million from the Australian Defence Force and the United States military. (1) Why would the Premier or the Minister for Police not spare just 20 or 30 minutes to talk with someone who has the potential to establish an industry in Western Australia that would result in a $500 million a year boost to the Western Australian economy and hundreds of jobs in design, manufacture and transportation industries? (2) Why would the Premier drive local innovation, jobs, income and opportunity offshore to New Zealand? (3) How can the Premier say with any credibility that his government supports Western Australian industries when a simple regulation change that would be in accord with firearms regulations in New South Wales and Victoria has been rejected out of hand by his minister? Mr C.J. BARNETT

(1)-(3) I thank the member for Midland for the question. I think, from memory, she is referring to an issue she raised with me last Wednesday night about an inventor who has come up with a bullet that has various positive characteristics. I undertook to try to assist Mr Green. I have not yet met with him and I have not yet been able to do what I said that I would do, but I am prepared to do what I can to assist Mr Green so that he gets support—not financial support—if that support is warranted, in dealing with the impediments to him manufacturing his product here. I am prepared to do that. Nothing has changed.
