Since 1 January 2018 has there been any riot or similar disturbance which has resulted in the destruction or damage of any property at any prison or detention centre in the State and if so: (a) on what date and at what prison/detention centre was the incident; (b) what was the nature of the incident; (c) how many prisoners or detainees were involved in the incident; (d) what, if any, destruction of property occurred and what was the approximate value; (e) were any prisoners, detainees or guards injured and if so, what was the nature of the injury; (f) on what date did the Department inform the Minister of the incident; and (g) on what date did the Minister inform the public of the incident?

The Department of Justice advises:
Since 1 January 2018 there have been two notifiable incidents which resulted in damage to property:
(a) 22 March 2018 - Albany Regional Prison
(b) Notifiable Incident
(c) Three prisoners
(d) Approximate $16,000.
(e) Eight staff were affected specifically from exposure to chemical agents used for control and physical restraint.
(f) 22 March 2018
(g) It is not normal practice to inform the public when there are notfiable incidents as this may pose a further risk to the good order and security of the prison.
2. (a) 14 April 2018 - Banksia Hill Detention Centre
(b) Detainee Disturbance
(c) Five Detainees
(d) Windows broken and valued at approximately $7,000.
(e) No.
(f) 15 April 2018.
(g) It is not normal practice to inform the public when there are notfiable incidents as this may pose a further risk to the good order and security of the prison.
