I thank Hon Sheila Mills for her interest in this project. She has been a very strong supporter of this project for quite some time. I am sure that all members would be interested to know that this is part of the Carpenter government’s $1 billion commitment to capital works initiatives across the education sector. That commitment includes funding for 40 schools - it is 40 now that I have announced the inclusion of Wiluna Remote Community School - $300 million for upgrades and $300 million for maintenance. The scope of the work at Settlers Primary School includes 14 classrooms, an art and craft room and a dental therapy clinic. This is phase 2 of the existing primary school, which was opened in 2005. The school is undergoing its phase 2 development to keep up with the rapidly growing population in the suburb of Baldivis in particular. It should be noted that over the next few years another 4 000 residents will move into the area. This trend is being repeated all over the state. It is a reflection of the outstanding economic conditions that we are enjoying in Western Australia at the moment. The phase 2 construction work, which is in its initial stages, will help the school keep pace with this rapidly expanding suburb. It will be one of the fastest growing areas in Western Australia over the next five years. The phase 2 work will add to the state-of-the-art facilities that already exist following the completion of phase 1 and will service the residents of Baldivis and its surrounding suburbs both now and in the future. The estimated cost of the project is $4.6 million. We are very proud of Settlers Primary School phase 2. I have mentioned the contribution of Hon Sheila Mills and the fact that she has taken such a strong interest in the development of this project. She never misses an opportunity to ask me how this project is coming along. She never misses an opportunity to find out the latest state of play in this very important project. Having mentioned the enthusiasm and interest shown by Hon Sheila Mills, I also put on record my appreciation of Hon Norm Marlborough for his persistence and tenacity in ensuring that this project went ahead on time for the benefit of the local community, in particular local students who will benefit yet again from another initiative of the Carpenter Labor government.
