I refer to the Labor Party’s election policy on old-growth forests and in particular to pre-election commitments made to the Pemberton community. (1) Does the Government intend to honour its commitment of $5 million to the Pemberton mill in accordance with a cabinet decision of the former coalition Government; if so, when; if not, why not? (2) Will the Government also honour the promise it made to provide $700 000 for the construction of the proposed Pemberton recreation facility? Dr GALLOP

Had the member given me notice of the question, I would be able to give a fuller answer. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: Order! Dr GALLOP: I want to be open and accountable to the Parliament. Mr Omodei: You crucified the people of the south west. The SPEAKER: Member for Warren-Blackwood. Mr Omodei: You didn’t have the guts to go down there. Why don’t you lift your game? The SPEAKER: Order! It is incumbent on the member for Warren-Blackwood to give the Premier at least a chance to answer the question. The member will be given some leeway when interjecting, but the current level of interjection is unacceptable. Dr GALLOP: I reiterate the point that I am very keen to give a full and comprehensive answer to the member, who represents that area. Had he given notice of the question, I could give a fuller and more comprehensive answer. Mr Omodei: It has been before Cabinet. Dr GALLOP: I will give an answer. (1) The issue of the Pemberton mill is being progressed in government. (2) If the member puts the question on the proposed Pemberton recreation facility on notice, I will respond to him.
