BUSSELTON WATER SUPPLY —
CHLORINATION
663. Hon ADELE
FARINA to the minister representing the Minister for Health:
I refer to a request by Diana Michaels of the Keep Busselton
Water Pure group for a meeting with the minister to discuss the health effects
suffered by Busselton residents since the chlorination of Busselton water.
(1) Will the minister meet with Diana Michaels?
(2) If no to (1), why not?
(3) Is the
minister aware that Busselton Water is refusing to take or respond to
complaints about the health effects of the chlorination of Busselton water, and
directing residents to contact the Minister for Health and/or the Department of
Health?
(4) Is the minister aware of the health effects experienced
by Busselton residents?
(5) What action is the minister taking to address the health
effects?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for some notice of this question. The
following information has been provided by the Minister for Health —
(1) No.
(2) I
understand that Diana Michaels will be able to discuss the matter with senior
officers from the Department of Water, and that relevant officers from the
Department of Health will also be able to attend that meeting.
(3) I understand
that an appropriate procedure has been established whereby complaints made to
Busselton Water that allege health-related effects of chlorination of the water
supply are firstly referred to the complainant's health practitioner
for investigation, with an invitation also to forward the complaint to the
Department of Health for investigation. Busselton Water has not directed
complainants to the Minister for Health.
(4) The
minister is aware of the publicity generated in Busselton and in the media by
those claiming health-related effects.
(5) In
relation to the answer to (3), the Department of Health has committed to
investigate any medically documented claim of adverse health effects allegedly
related to chlorination of the Busselton water supply. It is therefore
appropriate that medically documented complaints are referred to the
department.
