ABORIGINAL
HERITAGE AMENDMENT BILL 2014 — NATIONAL PARTY SUPPORT
169. Mr B.S. WYATT to the
Minister for Regional Development:
I refer to the meeting the minister attended with the Alliance of WA Aboriginal Land Councils in Broome two weeks ago
when he discussed the Barnett government's proposed amendments to the
Aboriginal Heritage Act. Noting that the proposed amendments are listed to be
debated this week, will the minister support the passage of the Aboriginal
Heritage Amendment Bill 2014 as it has been introduced?

I thank the member for Victoria Park for the question. It was
a fantastic meeting with the alliance. A number of issues were discussed; two,
notably, were the government's position and where we are moving in
respect of the remote Aboriginal communities. The other issue was the status of
the Aboriginal Heritage Act. A number of members of the National Party have met
with, I think, Simon Hawkins, who I understand is one of the chairs of the
Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation, to talk about any changes those groups
might want to put forward. We have received those changes. Currently, some of my
team are discussing them with Hon
Peter Collier, as the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, to talk about
what can be worked through in terms of government legislation. That is the
status. Those final changes will be brought back to my team for a decision in
the National Party's party room.
